Originally issued in 64 parts with 27 plates by George Cruikshank; upon the appearance of Part 49, John Cumberland announced that he had taken over publication from John Fairburn and this first issue in book form contains title pages with the Cumberland imprint. This copy is without the original Cruikshank plates, but has been extra-illustrated with 20 hand-colored portraits and views, all but one of which are hand-colored. First issue, with the "Excellmanns" pseudonym on the title pages and Cumberland's address listed at 19 Ludgate Hill (rather than 2 Cumberland Terrace). Tooley 278. Cohn 435. Prideaux, 341.
