“ONE HEART IS NOT CONNECTED TO ANOTHER THROUGH HARMONY ALONE”: FIRST EDITION OF COLORLESS TSUKURU TAZAKI AND HIS YEARS OF PILGRIMAGE, SIGNED AND STAMPED BY HARUKI MURAKAMI

MURAKAMI, Haruki. Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. London: Harvill Secker, 2014. Octavo, original pictorial paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of Murakami’s surreal, dreamlike tale of one man’s struggle to find his place among his friends and in the world, with original Japanese sticker set, signed and stamped on the title page by the author.

Murakami's first novel since his sprawling and wildly successful 1Q84 (2011), Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage sold more than a million copies when first published in Japan (as Shikisai o Motanai Tazaki Tsukuru to, Kare no Junrei no Toshi, 2013). According to critic Patti Smith, the novel is occasionally "tinged with the parallel worlds of 1Q84, particularly through dreams," but is more notable for its "moments of epiphany gracefully expressed, especially in regard to how people affect one another" (New York Times). Murakami "puts the ordinary and the fantastical in close proximity," claimed author Meg Wolizter. "You get the sense that for Murakami the wall between the two is flimsy and might easily be knocked down…" Translated into English by Philip Gabriel. Also issued the same year in a leatherbound signed limited edition of 100 copies. With original sticker set designed by five Japanese illustrators affixed to front endpaper to "encourage the reader to decorate the novel themselves" (publisher's press release). Ticket for Murakami's event at Edinburgh Book Festival laid in.
