“WHEN HISTORIANS THINK BACK, THEY WILL THINK OF THE FIGHTS AS CLASSICS”: PHOTOGRAPH SIGNED BY MUHAMMAD ALI AND JOE FRAZIER

ALI, Muhammad and FRAZIER, Joe. Photograph signed. No place, circa 1990. Vintage color print measuring 8-1/2 by 11 inches.

Vintage color photographic print with Muhammad Ali on the left and Joe Frazier on the right, each in tuxedos and mugging at each other with ferocious glares. Boldly signed by Ali and Frazier in clearly visible ink.

Theirs was the most famous rivalry in the history of boxing. “We know of Ali’s greatness,” wrote David Halberstam, “because of Frazier’s equivalent greatness… and when sports fans and historians think back, they will think of the fights as classics.” Ali and Frazier met in the ring three times. In 1971’s “Fight of the Century,” Frazier won a 15-round decision in Madison Square Garden. Next, in a 1974 non-title bout Ali won a decision in Madison Square Garden, and in the 1975 “Thriller in Manila,” Ali won the 14-round decision in a fight that he called “the closest thing to dyin’ I know of.” In this photograph, most likely taken some years after that last battle, the two boxing giants face off in tuxedos, mugging with expressions that recall their legendary bouts.
