MOTTLEY'S ILLUSTRATED LIFE OF PETER THE GREAT, CZAR OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE

(RUSSIA) (PETER I) MOTTLEY, John. History of the Life of Peter I. Emperor of Russia. London: J. Read, 1739. Three volumes. Octavo, contemporary full mottled calf rebacked in calf-gilt, red morocco spine labels, raised bands.

First edition of Mottley's illustrated life of Peter I, who along with the Empress Catherine helped bring Russia into the modern world, with engraved frontispiece portraits in Volumes I and II, a large folding map of the Russian Empire, and 11 engraved plates (nine folding).

Though chiefly a dramatist, Mottley wrote two accomplished biographies of Russian rulers—the present work and a study of Peter's wife Catherine, the two monarchs credited with bringing Russia into the modern world. Peter I, "The Great," was Czar of Russia from 1682 until his death in 1725. Original owner ink signature to title pages dated the year of publication; later owner ink initials to pastedowns.

Text with minor occasional foxing, plates generally clean; contemporary calf covers nicely rebacked and refurbished. An extremely good copy.
