This work carries Motley’s extensive history of the Netherlands to a close with an analysis of the Thirty Years’ War: “Motley's analysis of the tortuous and troubled interplay of religious and political dissension and his inevitable sympathy with the Arminian side subjected him to more criticism in the Netherlands than did his earlier works” (DAB).
