"MISS MOORE'S POEMS FORM PART OF THE SMALL BODY OF DURABLE POETRY WRITTEN IN OUR TIME" (T.S. ELIOT): SELECTED POEMS, 1935, SIGNED BY MARIANNE MOORE, WITH HER CORRECTIONS TO THE TEXT

MOORE, Marianne. Selected Poems… With an Introduction by T.S. Eliot. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1935. Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition, signed by Moore on the half title, and with textual corrections in her hand on pages 39 and 86.

"My conviction, for what it is worth, has remained unchanged for the last fourteen years: that Miss Moore's poems form part of the small body of durable poetry written in our time; of that small body of writings, among what passes for poetry, in which an original sensibility and alert intelligence and deep feeling have been engaged in maintaining the life of the English language" (T.S. Eliot, from the Introduction, page xiv). "She has a very precise and original mind and builds the most elaborate mental constructions round unusual facts of natural history… In the pharmacology of the Modern Movement she occupies the place of an imperceptible vitamin of little-known properties whose absence could prove terminal" (Connolly, The Modern Movement). On page 39, in "Critics and Connoisseurs," in the first line of the third stanza, Moore has corrected "which" to "what"; on page 86, in line 21 of "An Octopus," Moore has corrected the erroneous misspelling of the word "multiplicitous." Dust jacket price-clipped by the publisher (as issued) with the stamped and cancelled $2.00 price. Connolly, The Modern Movement 81.

Book fine, dust jacket showing a bit of edge-wear and dust soiling to rear panel, exceptionally good.
