Night Before Christmas

KEITH WARD'S WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED EDITION OF THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

(MOORE, Clement C.) WARD, Keith. The Night Before Christmas. Racine, Wisconsin: Whitman, 1939. Slim quarto, original illustrated "linen-like" self-wrappers, staple-bound as issued; pp.12.

1939 Ward-illustrated edition of this perennial Yuletide classic, featuring Ward's colorful illustrations from watercolors on every page.

"One of the world's most widely read poems… The Night Before Christmas recast St. Nicholas as a cheerful, rosy-cheeked elf and established Christmas as a time for giving gifts to children" (Carnegie Mellon University). Artist Keith Ward first created his wonderful series of watercolor illustrations for this Yuletide classic in 1935. Ward worked in a remarkable range of styles, from realism to caricature, and counted among his clients, not only publishers of children's books, but some of the largest advertising agencies of his time. The look of his illustrations for The Night Before Christmas is reminiscent of the 1940s "Dick and Jane" books— and no wonder, as Keith Ward was the illustrator.

Text and illustrations fresh and colorful, light rubbing, mild edge-wear to wrappers. A bright extremely good copy.
