“ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL FACES AND SOUNDS OF CONTEMPORARY JAZZ”: MONK’S DREAM, SIGNED BY THELONIOUS MONK

MONK, Thelonious. Monk’s Dream. The thelonious Monk Quartet. New York: Columbia Records, 1962. Original phonograph, 33-1/3 rpm., original photographic phonograph album cover.

Vintage 1963 LP phonograph and album cover of Monk’s Dream: The Thelonious Monk Quartet, boldly signed on the rear album cover by Monk.

Thelonious Monk is “one of the principal faces and sounds of contemporary jazz… coming across Monk is like discovering a new continent, populated with new species and ideas, shaped by a new geology… [His] wry, angular melodies and unusual harmonic progressions are among the most striking contributions to the jazz” (New York Times). This 1963 Columbia Records LP in the original album cover of Monk’s Dream, features his solos Body and Soul and Just a Gigolo, and six compositions—Bye-Ya, Bolivar Blues, Bright Mississippi, Monk’s Dream, Sweet and Lovely, and Five Spot Blues—recorded in late 1962 with the Thelonious Monk Quartet featuring Charlie Rouse, Tenor Sax, John Ore, Bass, Frankie Dunlap, Drums, and Thelonious Monk, Piano. This vintage 1963 LP, one of the first albums recorded by Monk and his Quartet under the Columbia Records label, was released at the “peak of his popular acclaim” (New Grove XII:490). With “Stereo CS 8765” on front album cover, “CBS CS 8765” on rear album cover. Cover photograph by Don Hunstein.

LP album fine; slight edge-wear, rubbing to extremely good album cover.
