Kiss for Little Bear

FIRST EDITION OF A KISS FOR LITTLE BEAR, INSCRIBED BY MAURICE SENDAK, WITH A WONDERFUL ORIGINAL DRAWING OF LITTLE BEAR

(SENDAK, Maurice) MINARIK, Else Holmelund. A Kiss for Little Bear. New York: Harper & Row, (1968). Octavo, original pictorial paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of the fifth book in the Little Bear series, winner of the 1968 New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year Award, inscribed: “For Stuart Wright GRR! Maurice Sendak June/4,’84,” with an original drawing of Little Bear in his trademark top hat.

A wonderful collaboration between a writer with a gift for creating books that children can read by themselves and one of the finest children's book illustrators of the 20th century. Hanrahan A70. The recipient of this copy, Stuart Wright, was an assistant editor who worked on a posthumously published compilation of letters by acclaimed poet Randall Jarrell. While Sendak only managed to complete one of the three works he would ultimately illustrate for Jarrell prior to Jarrell’s untimely death in 1965, the two undoubtedly carried on correspondence related to that work. The letters they wrote were most likely the basis for how Wright and Sendak came to meet each other in 1984, the year in which this book was inscribed and just prior to the 1985 publication of Randall Jarrell’s Letters: An Autobiographical and Literary Selection.

Book and price-clipped dust jacket with minor soiling. A near-fine inscribed copy with a rare and beautiful original drawing by Maurice Sendak.
