MILLINGEN, James. Peintures Antiques de Vases Grecs de la Collection de Sir John Coghill Bart. Rome: Imprimé par de Romanis, 1817. Large folio (15 by 22 inches), contemporary three-quarter green morocco gilt rebacked with original spine laid down; raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut.

First edition, with 52 copperplate engravings (one double-page) of ancient Greek vases and their designs from the collection of John Coghill. Association copy, with a Coghill family bookplate.

James Millingen (1774-1845), an archaeologist, “bought antiquities with rare judgment, and supplied most of the great museums of Europe with their choicest specimens of ancient art. He frequently offered his purchases to the trustees of the British Museum” (DNB). The nucleus of Sir John Coghill’s collection was purchased by him from from Italian playwright and art connoisseur Jean Gherardo de Rossi, who had 39 plates struck depicting the vases. Coghill added to this collection and had 13 additional plates engraved depicting these additions. “The Coghill collection of Greek vases (which included those of de Lalo and Bonnet) eventually passed in to the hands of Henry Englefield and Thomas Hope” (Blackmer 11284).
