"TO LOUELLA HERSELF": SCARCE PRESENTATION/ASSOCIATION FIRST EDITION OF HAWAII, WARMLY INSCRIBED BY MICHENER TO LEGENDARY HOLLYWOOD COLUMNIST LOUELLA PARSONS PRIOR TO PUBLICATION

MICHENER, James. Hawaii. New York: Random House, (1959). Octavo, original beige cloth, cartographic endpapers, original dust jacket.

First trade edition, first printing, of Michener's epic novel, wonderfully inscribed by him to Louella Parsons on the title page in the month prior to publication, "At Louella's Oct. 21, 1959, To Louella herself, May the pixies guard her, may the spalpeens [rascals] adore her, And may the echoes of Ireland resound in her heart forever, Love, Jim Michener."

Hawaii reflects Michener's continuing fascination with the Pacific region, begun 12 years earlier in his Pulitzer prize-winning Tales of the South Pacific. Praised as "brilliant panoramic novel" (New York Times Book Review), it is "a monumental chronicle of Hawaii, an extraordinary and fascinating novel' (Saturday Review). His novel was the basis for director George Roy Hill's 1966 Oscar-nominated film from a screenplay by Dalton Trumbo, starring Max von Sydow and Julie Andrews. "First printing" stated on copyright page. Also issued in a signed limited edition (400 copies), no priority established. With "11/59" on front dust jacket flap: first reviewed in the New York Times on November 22, 1959. Michener's warm inscription to Louella Parsons, known as "the first lady of Hollywood," likely refers to her Irish descent through her maternal grandmother. Parsons was "the most formidable of all Tinseltown gossip columnists" (Parish, Hollywood Book of Extravagance, 169). In her April 1959 column, she wrote: "I have just heard that author James Michener, with whom I had several pleasant conversations in Honolulu, is arriving here."

A fine copy in a price-clipped dust jacket.
