L'Oiseau

A MEDITATION ON BIRDS, 1867

MICHELET, Jules. L’Oiseau. Paris: Hachette, 1867. Quarto, early 20th-century three-quarter blue-green morocco, raised bands, elegant gilt-decorated spine, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut.

Illustrated edition of Michelet’s search for the “inner nature” of birds “as sentient beings,” with 210 in-text wood-engravings by Hector Giacomelli, beautifully bound.

Late in his life, the renowned French historian Jules Michelet published “a crowd of extraordinary little books… in some of the best of them, natural science… supplied the text… The subject of natural history was treated, not from the point of view of mere science, nor from that of sentiment, nor of anecdote nor of gossip, but from that of the author’s fervent democratic pantheism, and the result… was often excellent” (Britannica). First published in 1856, L’Oiseau, perhaps the most successful of these books (this is the eighth edition), includes observations on nests, wings, migrations and birdsong. “It is impossible to rise from a perusal of this work without having acquired a new and living interest in the winged race” (W.H. Davenport Adams). Illustrator Hector Giacomelli, whose wood-engravings were praised for their “grace and finish, and fidelity to Nature,” worked with Gustave Doré in producing the engravings for his Bible. Text in French. Original wrappers bound in. See Zimmer, 434; Nissen 631.

A few faint patches of foxing to first and last few leaves, slight soiling to original wrappers, minor rubbing to outer hinges. An about-fine copy, beautifully bound.
