"LISTEN—YOUR FINAL DELECTATION—TO THE VOICES, TO THE EXQUISITE MUSIC OF THAT STRANGE PROCESSION"

(CAVAFY, Constantine) MICHALS, Duane. A Tribute to Cafavy. (New York): Limited Editions Club, (2003). Folio (13-1/2 by 18-1/2 inches), original grey-brown cloth; housed in original clamshell box. $1200.

Signed limited first edition, number 20 of only 300 copies signed by photographer Duane Michals on the limitation page, with five photogravures by Michals.

"Duane Michals has readily accepted the challenge of making visible the intangible aspects of life that can be felt by all but never seen… Michals has consistently chosen themes about death, eroticism, chance occurrences, dreams, the spirit world and the cosmos" (McDarrah & McDarrah, 677). Michals' images here accompany six poems by the Greek Alexandrian poet Constantine Cavafy. Cavafy "had much in common with William Butler Yeats… To begin with, they were almost exact contemporaries… Moreover, the two had deep ties to small but proud countries engaged at the time in strong nationalist movements—a fact that might partly account for their strong sense of the past. Both had an aristocratic attitude toward life and toward their art, being perhaps the last patrician poets of our era. Both started publishing poetry in the late 1880s, and in their later maturity, sought to attain the impersonal voice, the voice of an era, that the younger English poet T.S. Eliot sought in his art" (LEC newsletter). Translated from the Greek by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard, with the original Greek text printed interlinearly. With LEC newsletter laid in.

Fine condition, in a faded and worn clamshell box.
