“THE STREAM OF TIME BRINGS WITH IT GERMS OF SPIRITUAL VITALITY”: FIRST EDITION OF MERTON’S SEEDS OF CONTEMPLATION
MERTON, Thomas. Seeds of Contemplation. (Norfolk, Connecticut): New Directions, (1949). Octavo, original finished brown burlap, mounted cover and spine labels, original dust jacket.
First trade edition of Merton’s beloved book of devotions.
Following his conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1938, "Merton's writings from the 1940s into the late 1950s focused on his convictions about the need for prayer, penance, an ascetic approach to life and the value of contemplative silence. These sentiments touched a deep nerve in American Catholicism… Merton not only found millions of lay readers, but many men, inspired by his example, came to the monastery to try their vocation" (ANB). "Seeds of Contemplation is a devotional work, a collection of thoughts on spiritual development, a work written ad seipsum and then published in the hope that its thoughts would find receptive hearts… [It] strikes warning notes that are sounded in the writings of mystics and which cause worldly souls to tremble" (Masterpieces of Catholic Literature, 956-57). Published the same year as the signed limited edition of 100 copies. Owner signature.
Book with only mild toning to cloth and labels, dust jacket with slight soiling and light wear and toning to extremities. A near-fine copy.
