Show Me!

FIRST EDITION OF SHOW ME!, WITH 125 BLACK-AND-WHITE PHOTOGRAVURES

MCBRIDE, Will. Show Me! New York: St. Martin’s, 1975. Folio, original black paper-covered boards, original photographic dust jacket.

First edition in English of McBride’s controversial photobook, with 125 black-and-white photogravures (many double-page).

Designed as a “serious book about sex education,” McBride’s Show Me! is presented “from the point of view of a child learning about sex… [with] a bright and breezy text along the top of each double-page image, while the pictures are shot in a grainy, graphic 1960s style… Free of the coy prurience that so often degrades this genre of photobook,” Show Me! remains “the most sexually explicit book ever published by a mainstream U.S. publisher” (Parr & Badger II:26-27). The American-born McBride lives and works in Germany, where his body of work earned him the German Photographic Association’s prestigious Erich Salomon Prize. First edition in English, preceded by the 1974 German edition, Zeig Mal!. With captions by McBridge, explanatory text by Dr. Helga Fleischhauer-Hardt.

A fine copy.
