“BET ON ME TO KNOCKOUT PRIMO CARNERA FOR THE TITLE”: GIANT VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHIC POSTER OF MAX BAER IN FULL BOXING REGALIA, INSCRIBED AT LENGTH TO HIS FRIEND RODEO CHAMPION “CALGARY RED,” BY HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING CHAMPION MAX BAER
BAER, Max. Photographic poster inscribed. No place, circa 1934. Enlarged brown-tone photographic print on matte stock, measuring 38 by 48 inches.
Enormous poster-size photographic print depicting Max Bear clad in boxing trunks and gloves and throwing a jab, inscribed under: “To ‘Calgary Red,’ Bet on me to knockout Primo Carnera for the Title. Good luck on your car business, you’ll be number one for General Motors one day. Your old pal, Max Baer 6-4-34.”
This poster is inscribed from heavyweight champion Max Baer to his close friend, championship Canadian rodeo rider Robert “Larry” Cameron, known in his riding days as “Calgary Red.” As promised, Baer soundly defeated Primo Carnera just ten days after this poster was inscribed. At the match, Carnera hit the mat 11 times and Baer walked away Heavyweight Champion of the World. The inscription also refers to Cameron’s car dealership in Sacramento. In the 1950s, long after Baer gave up boxing upon losing to Lou Nova in 1941 and had turned to acting and entertaining, Cameron hired Baer as a celebrity salesperson to help boost sales and recruit famous clients.
Signature bold, a few words retouched, light wear to extremities and a few nail holes around perimeter of poster. An extraordinary and desirable piece of boxing memorabilia in extremely good condition.
