"WHEN YOU PLAY A GAME OF THRONES YOU WIN OR DIE": FIRST SIGNED/LIMITED EDITIONS OF THE FIRST TWO BOOKS IN GEORGE R.R. MARTIN'S EPIC FANTASY SERIES

MARTIN, George R.R. A Game of Thrones. WITH: A Clash of Kings. Atlanta: Meisha Merlin, 2000, 2003. Two volumes. Thick octavo, original cloth, original dust jackets, original cloth slipcases .

Richly illustrated first signed limited editions, published by Meisha Merlin, of the first two novels in "A Song of Ice and Fire"—"one of the best fantasy series ever written"—number 75 of 448 numbered copies of A Game of Thrones, and number 288 of 448 numbered copies of A Clash of Kings, each boldly signed on the limitation page by George R.R. Martin and the illustrators.

George R.R. Martin's brilliantly conceived series earned him the title of "the American Tolkien" (Time Magazine). "Martin possesses a nearly supernatural gift for storytelling… His finest creations thus far are Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen… Moreover, historical asides are inseparable from the books' larger narratives, so as you're propelled through the story, the sensation is like riding a wave" (New York Times). Likening it to not only Tolkien's Lord of the Rings but also The Once and Future King by T.H. White, critics deem Martin's work "one of the best fantasy series ever written" (Denver Post). Basis for the HBO series. These two signed limited editions are the only titles of the series published by Meisha Merlin, preceded only by the trade first editions of 1996 and 1999. Subterranean Press, who took over the series starting with the third book, did not issue new signed limited editions of these first two titles until 2014 and 2015. Each book is also signed on the limitation page by its illustrator (Jeffrey Jones for A Game of Thrones, and John Howe for A Clash of Kings) and by Charles Keegan, who created the sigils and maps for both volumes.

Both volumes in fine condition.
