“THE TEST OF FIRE IS PITILESS”: CHAGALL’S CERAMICS AND SCULPTURES, WITH AN ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH

CHAGALL, Marc. The Ceramics and Sculptures of Chagall. Preface by Andre Malraux. Monaco: André Sauret, (1972). Folio (10 by 13 inches), original light gray cloth, original dust jacket, original cardboard slipcase.

First edition of Sorlier’s catalogue of 220 Chagall three-dimensional pieces, including vases, bas reliefs, tiles, dishes, and sculptures in bronze and marble, with an original lithographic frontispiece.

Called by André Malraux “the greatest imager of the century,” Marc Chagall’s “emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences” (Dictionary of Modern Art). “Sculpture and ceramics offer free rein to Chagall’s creative will… All his poetry and fantasy can thus gush forth unrestrained, free from any preconceptions of form, and his visions find full freedom of expression” (Sorlier). Chagall once remarked that “the ceramic art is nothing more than the alliance of fire and clay. If what you offer is good, the fire will give you something in return; if it is bad, everything is smashed, nothing remains and there is nothing you can do about it. The test of fire is pitiless.” The wonderful original lithographic frontispiece to this volume was printed by Fernand Mourlot, who ran a lithography press in Paris, where such greats as Braque, Matisse, Picasso, Miró, Léger and of course Chagall, came to have their designs printed and to learn about this still nascent medium. Sorlier 646.

A fine copy, in a slightly worn slipcase.
