VINTAGE SPORTS BIOGRAPHIES SIGNED BY MANTLE, MUSIAL, UNITAS, PATTERSON AND OTHERS

FITZGERALD, Ed, et al. [15 Volumes of Sport Magazine Library.]. [New York]: Bartholomew House, (1960-62). WITH: AASENG, Nate. Baseball: You are the Manager. (New York): Laurel-Leaf Books, (1985). Together, 16 volumes. 12mo, original photographic stiff paper wrappers.

First editions of 15 vintage paperback biographies from the “Sport Magazine Library” of iconic athletes, with volumes signed, usually across the color photographic front wrapper, by Johnny Unitas, Stan Musial, Mickey Mantle, Floyd Patterson, Warren Spahn, Paul Hornung and Johnny Lattner.

These biographies of popular sports stars supplemented Sport Magazine, "one of the most important sporting publications" (Lomazow 1180). Several volumes have been signed by their subjects, usually on the front wrapper: Johnny Unitas (No. 1, with the added inscription "Best Wishes"), Stan Musial (No. 2), Mickey Mantle (No. 5), Floyd Patterson (No. 7), Warren Spahn (No. 9), Paul Hornung (No. 13; also title page, No. 14) and Johnny Lattner (title page, No. 14). It Takes Heart in first Sport Magazine Library edition; first published in hardcover, 1959. Two volumes, Heroes of Sport and Best from Sport, reprint articles and essays first published in Sport. This collection without Football's Greatest Quarterbacks (No. 10) and Bowling Secrets from the Stars (No. 15). It includes a second printing of Nate Aaseng's Baseball: You are the Manager, which invites readers to test their understanding of statistics in famous major league games. Grobani 8-190. Inkstamp and pen mark to rear wrapper of Warren Spahn.

Interiors generally quite clean. Most wrappers bright and unrubbed; tiny worming to rear wrapper of Warren Spahn; creasing with minor loss to wrappers of Roger Maris and Bob Cousy. All athlete signatures bold and easily legible. An excellent collection of vintage sport biographies, in near-fine condition. Scarce and desirable signed.
