MANTLE'S FIRST BOOK, THE MICKEY MANTLE STORY, 1953, INSCRIBED BY HIM EARLY IN HIS CAREER

MANTLE, Mickey and EPSTEIN, Ben. The Mickey Mantle Story. New York: Henry Holt, (1953). Octavo, original tan cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Mantle's first autobiography, with a Foreword by Casey Stengel and illustrated with 32 pages of early photographs, boldly signed, "To T— K— Best Wishes, Mickey Mantle."

"If someone asked me to list my top thrills in baseball, you can bet my first look at Mickey Mantle would have to be up there pretty high" (Stengel). Mantle was only three years into his major league career when he was asked to tell "in his own words, his version of a dream that began in his father's heart twenty-one years ago and came true in 1951 when Mickey jogged out into the outfield of Yankee Stadium." Joe DiMaggio retired at the end of that 1951 season and Mantle replaced him in center field the following year. "In the glory days of the Bronx Bombers, Mantle was their #1 weapon, the player who made the Yankees unbeatable year after pennant-winning year" (Herb Gluck). Smith 16149; Grobani 8-75. Previous owner note lightly taped to front pastedown: "Presented to — — by the owner, one day after the passing of Mickey Mantle."

Interior fine, original cloth binding with minor wear to corners and spine ends, small chip at head of spine. Very scarce dust jacket (supplied from another first edition copy) with edge wear and creasing, some loss to head and foot of spine with neat tape repair near head. Desirable inscribed.
