"IF YOU'RE GOING TO STOP A BAND PLAYING EVERY TIME SOME ONE HAS AN ACCIDENT, YOU'LL LEAD A VERY STRENUOUS LIFE": FIRST EDITION OF KATHERINE MANSFIELD'S THE GARDEN PARTY AND OTHER STORIES, 1922

MANSFIELD, Katherine. The Garden Party and Other Stories. London, Bombay, Sydney: Constable, (1922). Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of this powerful collection of short stories.

Novelist Edna O'Brien noted, "As a short story writer Katherine Mansfield is closely akin to Chekhov. Their sensitiveness of perception is similar, their grasp of significant detail, their sense of quiet pattern, and their insistence on the poetic quality of simple homely familiarities. Katherine Mansfield broke completely with the older tradition of English tale-telling. Her influence on her own generation, which has been great, has served to render it conscious of the possibility of the short story as an art form presenting life at an arrested moment" (DNB). Includes some of Mansfield's most important stories: "Prelude," "Bliss," "Miss Brill," "The Daughters of the Late Colonel," "The Doll's House," and the title story. Second-state binding, as usual, with orange lettering on blue cloth. Approximately 25 copies were bound in the first-state trial binding, which was rejected due to poor legibility. Several of the stories here were previously printed in periodicals, including "The Garden Party," which first appeared in three parts the same year in the Saturday and Weekly Westminster Gazette. Kirkpatrick A5a.

Book with two tiny bumps to rear board, dust jacket with mild toning to extremities. A lovely copy in very nearly fine condition.
