AROUND THE WORLD FROM A TO ZYZMORY

MALTE-BRUN, Conrad, editor. Dictionnaire geographique de Vosgien, contenant la description generale et particuliere de cinq parties du monde connu, revu avec soin. Paris: Lebigre, 1831. 16mo, 19th-century quarter sheep, marbled paper boards, red morocco spine label, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. $500.

Expanded edition of a popular compact geographical guide, featuring seven oversized, folding maps.

This conveniently portable, alphabetically arranged overview of global locations became an immediate success following its initial appearance in 1747. Scholar and geographer Abbé Jean-Baptiste Ladvocat based the work on Echard's 1692 Gazetteer's: Or Newsman's Interpreter and published it under the pseudonym Vosgien, which it retained in one form or another through numerous subsequent editions and adaptations. The present example was revised by Conrad Malte-Brun, author of the Précis de Géographie Universelle and several other important works of cartography and geography, and augmented with over 20,000 articles "qui ne se trouvent dans aucune e?dition." The volume is illustrated with seven folding maps engraved by Jean-Baptiste Poirson, B. Tardieu and Charles V. Monin. Fifth edition. Pages closely trimmed. A second copy of the leaf listing the abbreviations used was bound in at the back and later excised.

Contents clean. Light rubbing to extremities; minor discoloration to spine foot. A nice example, complete with all maps and in an attractive contemporary binding.
