Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails

"AN ESSENTIAL TOOL FOR ANY SELF-RESPECTING HUMAN": HARRY'S ABC OF MIXING COCKTAILS

(COCKTAILS) (MACELHONE, Harry). Harry's ABC of Mixing Cocktails. Over 300 Cocktail Recipes. London: Dean & Son, circa 1924. Small octavo (measures 3-1/2 by 5-1/4 inches), original red cloth, original dust jacket.

1924 edition of legendary bartender Harry MacElhone's cocktail guide, in rarely found original dust jacket.

ABC of Mixing Cocktails is "an essential tool for any self-respecting barman." When the "New York Bar" opened in Paris in 1911, MacElhone was one of its first bartenders. After moving to New York he was "exiled from his job… at the Plaza" due to Prohibition (DeGroff, Essential Cocktail, 5). He then went to "Ciro's Club in London, where he published his book in 1919. Harry returned to Paris in 1923 and took over his previous house of employ, calling it 'Harry's New York Bar'" (Abou-Ganim, Modern Mixologist, 26). It became "a meeting-place for the 'Lost Generation' of writers, including… the hard-drinking Hemingway… In the novel Casino Royale, Bond called it the best place in Paris to get a 'solid drink'" (BBC). In his introduction MacElhone writes: "in this new edition I have added all the latest cocktails." Text with no date past 1924; advertisement on dust jacket proposing publication of The Home of Boxing, issued circa 1924.

Book fine; usual light edge-wear and faint toning to rarely found, extremely good dust jacket.
