First edition illustrated by Maurice Sendak, inscribed by him to fellow children’s author Natalie Babbitt and her family, “Oct. ’70. For the Babbitts-Much Thanks! Maurice Sendak.”

First published in Dealings with the Fairies (1867), MacDonald’s enchanting fairy tale is also his “greatest flight of the imagination” (Carpenter & Prichard, 211). With afterword by W.H. Auden. Publisher’s prospectus laid in. Hanrahan A67. This copy inscribed to fellow children’s author Natalie Babbitt and her family. Babbitt is best known for her novel Tuck Everlasting (1975). She and Sendak shared an editor for many years.

Book fine. Near-fine dust jacket with mild toning and wear to spine. An excellent inscribed copy with an outstanding children’s literature association.
