SIGNED BY FIVE WORLD WAR II ACES AND AIRMEN

LUCAS, Laddie, editor. Wings of War. Airmen of All Nations Tell Their Stories 1939-1945. New York: Macmillan, (1983). Octavo, original half blue cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of this collection of first-person narratives by World War II airmen, with leaf tipped onto the half title bearing the signatures of five prominent Allied airmen.

Edited by RAF commanding officer Laddie Lucas, Wings of War strives to tell the stories of many of World War II's most distinguished airmen (Allies and Axis) in their own words. The personal narratives cover everything from dogfights to airplane preferences to kamikazes, offering a comprehensive view of the war worldwide. The tipped-in leaf features the clipped signatures of Harold Balfour (9-victory ace and Under-Secretary of State for Air under Churchill), Dave McIntosh (a 41-mission navigator in the notoriously terrifying wooden Mosquito plane), George Carpenter (a 13-victory American ace who was shot down in 1944 and ended the war in a POW camp), and Murray Peden (a Canadian RAF bomber pilot), as well as the signature of 15-victory ace James Goodson directly on the leaf itself. owner stamp of archaeology author Eugene B. McCluney.

Book near-fine, with a bit of soiling to spine. Price-clipped dust jacket near-fine, with faintest soiling, small closed tear, and slightest rubbing to extremities.
