“IT’S A BIRD! IT’S A PLANE! IT’S SUPERMAN!”: FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST SUPERMAN NOVEL
(SHUSTER, Joe) (SIEGEL, Jerry). LOWTHER, George. The Adventures of Superman. New York: Random House, (1942). Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition of the first Superman novel, illustrated by the character’s co-creator Joe Shuster, with four vibrant color plates and numerous black-and-white illustrations, in scarce dust jacket.
“Listen to me, son… It strikes me now. I called ye a—a superman, and that’s what ye be. Remember that. You’re Superman!” (page 57). Boyhood friends Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created America’s most iconic comic book superhero; he first appeared in Action Comics #1 (1938). Faster than a speeding bullet, the Man of Steel moved beyond the comics page to radio, cinema and prose. This first Superman novel, penned by the scriptwriter and director of “The Adventures of Superman” radio series, reflects the trials of a nation at war, as Superman investigates sunken submarines and hunts down suspicious spies. Superman’s “dynamic personality has transcended the comics medium to become incorporated into Western contemporary mythology” (Clute & Nicholls, 1183). With frontispiece, illustrated title page and numerous in-text illustrations, nine full-page illustrations (four in color). Trace of signature removal to front free endpaper, rear dust jacket panel.
Interior generally fresh with front inner paper hinge starting but sound, light expert color restoration to front board; slight chipping, minor dampstaining to verso of bright unrestored dust jacket. An extremely good copy.
