“FIVE LITTLE PUPPIES… WENT FOR A WALK IN THE WIDE, WIDE WORLD”
LOWREY, Janette Sebring. The Poky Little Puppy. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1942. Small quarto, original blue cloth spine with pictorial boards, original dust jacket.
First edition of this beloved Little Golden Book—“the best-selling children’s picture book of all time”—charmingly illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren, in scarce original dust jacket.
One of the original dozen Little Golden Books issued simultaneously by Simon and Schuster in 1942, The Poky Little Puppy remains one of the series' most popular titles in the series and one of the best-selling American children's books of all time. Little Golden Books, which sold for only a quarter apiece when first published, were intended to be both durable and affordable. At the time, many American families considered most children's books a luxury; titles sold for $2-$3, and the strictures of the wartime economy did not encourage such purchasing. "Little Golden Books, with their colorful, bright pages, were designed to be handled by children… For the first time, a quality children's book was made available to children who normally couldn't have afforded one" (Santi, 9). "The best-selling children's picture book of all time… [The Poky Little Puppy] has [as of 2007] sold more than 15 million copies and is still in print. For her efforts, Lowrey was paid a fee of $75" (New York Times). Born in Sweden, Tenggren is best known as a Disney Studios animator from 1936-39, where he worked on such classics as Snow White and Pinocchio. Santi 8.
Book extremely good, with light scattered soiling to interior and a bit of rubbing mainly to extremities of binding. Bright dust jacket very good, with light wear to extremities, loss to spine ends. A rare and desirable copy.
