Joe Louis. Man and Super-Fighter

"FOR A NEGRO TO BECOME THE CHAMPION HEAVYWEIGHT PUGILIST DEMANDS THAT HE BE SOMETHING MORE THAN THE SUPERIOR HUMAN WITH NATURE'S WEAPONS": FIRST EDITION OF JOE LOUIS: MAN AND SUPER-FIGHTER, 1936

(LOUIS, Joe) VAN EVERY, Edward. Joe Louis. Man and Super-Fighter. New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1936. Octavo, original gilt-stamped brown cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of this early, simply written biography of one of boxing's greats by a New York Sun columnist, in rare original dust jacket.

"A book that should be vitally interesting to all fight fans, for little has been told of Joe Louis' early life and early fights. A simple account of his rise, in about 10 months, from Ford plant worker, where he was known in amateur competitions, to present position as 'greatest human fighting machine'—probably headed for world championship. All his big fights are fairly detailed—there are scenes in training camps, dressing rooms, ringsides, to show the fearlessness and composure of Louis. The book is done simply—career, personality, a clean record, a complete understanding of his position as representative of his race" (Kirkus Reviews).

Book nearly fine, with a bit of wear at base of spine. Fragile price-clipped dust jacket extremely good, with shallow chipping, faintest dampstaining at front corners and only light wear and toning to extremities. A near-fine copy.
