Mutiny of the Elsinore

“IT IS MURDER AND MUTINY ON THE HIGH SEAS”: FIRST EDITION OF JACK LONDON’S THE MUTINY OF THE ELSINORE, IN VERY SCARCE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET

LONDON, Jack. The Mutiny of the Elsinore. New York: Macmillan, 1914. Octavo, original pictorial yellow cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition of Jack London’s much-loved adventure novel, in scarce original dust jacket.

This adventure on the high seas was originally serialized in Hearst's Magazine under the title, "The Sea Gangsters," between November 1913 and August 1914. "The novel, an all-out melodrama, was designed as a protest against the way the American merchant marine was being allowed to founder" (O'Connor, 343). It borrowed heavily from London's experiences traveling around Cape Horn aboard the Dirigo and is notable for its striking depictions of life at sea. BAL 11956. Woodbridge, London & Tweney 124.

Book bright and fine, fragile dust jacket with minor soiling, shallow chipping, small expert repair to base of spine. A handsome copy in near-fine condition, most rare in original dust jacket.
