ALEXANDER, Lloyd. The Prydain Chronicles: The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, The Castle of Llyr, Taran Wanderer, The High King. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1964-68. Together, five volumes. Octavo, original boards, original dust jackets.
First editions of Lloyd Alexander's Newbery-winning Prydain Chronicles, the first two titles—by far the scarcest—each signed by Alexander. A lovely, complete set, in the Evaline Ness-designed dust jackets, in fine condition.
"Lloyd Alexander ranks as one of the best writers of high fantasy to emerge since Tolkien, and his five novels comprising the Chronicles of Prydain are true classics of the genre" (Tymn, Fantasy Literature, 40-3). The Black Cauldron was named a Newbery Honor Book; The High King won the Newbery Medal. Disney adapted the first two volumes into the animated film The Black Cauldron (1985)—the first Disney film to receive a PG rating. The Black Cauldron and The High King dust jackets without mention of the Newbery awards.
The High King dust jacket gently toned. An exceptional and desirable signed set in fine condition.
