1862 MILITARY APPOINTMENT, SIGNED BY ABRAHAM LINCOLN AS PRESIDENT

Splendid Lincoln Civil War document appointing James C. Fisher as "Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers," countersigned by Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War, with fragile paper seal present.

The recipient of this commission, James C. Fisher, initially served as a surgeon for the 5th New Jersey Volunteers, a position in which he looked after roughly 1000 men; after this appointment, he would have been responsible for the well-being of an entire brigade, or roughly 3000 to 5000 soldiers. This commission is handsomely engraved with two military vignettes, one of an emblematic eagle and the other an army motif with crossed flags, cannon, and other accouterments of war. Docketed in red ink in upper left-hand corner.

Usual faint fold lines, just a touch of wear and soiling. In exceptional condition, with fragile paper seal fresh and complete.
