Life of Abraham Lincoln

“BY FAR THE BEST”: FIRST EDITION OF HOLLAND’S LIFE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, 1866

(LINCOLN, Abraham) HOLLAND, Josiah Gilbert. The Life of Abraham Lincoln. Springfield, Massachusetts: Gurdon Bill, 1866. Octavo, publisher's three-quarter black calf, raised bands, black morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers and edges.

First edition of Holland’s “timely and popular” biography of Lincoln, published the year after his assassination, with four steel-engraved plates, including frontispiece portrait of Lincoln, scarce in publisher’s three-quarter calf gilt.

"The tragic and dramatic death of Lincoln gave rise to a flood of writings about him. By far the best of these was the biography written by J. G. Holland, well known then as a novelist and as one of the editors of the Springfield Republican" (Angle, Shelf of Lincoln Books, 18-20). Holland's "timely and popular" biography, published a year after Lincoln's death, "enforced lessons to be drawn from the President's career, as well as recorded biographical facts" (ANB). Monaghan 856. Sabin 32512. Contemporary owner signature on title page.

Scattered light foxing, binding handsome. An about-fine copy.
