Otter's Story

AN OTTER’S STORY, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR EMIL E. LIERS, WHOSE PET OTTERS WERE THE BASIS FOR SEVERAL BOOKS AND DISNEY MOVIES

LIERS, Emil E. An Otter's Story. New York: Viking, 1953. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition, third printing, boldly inscribed on the title page: “Best wishes to Chuck from Emil E. Liers “The Friend of the Otters” and The Stars of Walt Disney’s Beaver Valley, Flash the Teen Age Otter and other movies.”

After trapping a pair of grown otters, author Emil Liers discovered their litter. Deciding to save the baby otters, Liers took them home to Homer, Minnesota, where he kept them as pets. Eventually, he used the otters as the inspiration for this, his first novel for children. Liers was an environmentalist throughout his life and had a particular affinity for the Mississippi Valley region. As technical advisor on a number of Disney movies, mentioned in the inscription, Liers attempted to bring the wilds of the United States to life in order to encourage children to practice conservation. In 1961, Walt Disney brought one of Liers' books, Flash, the Teenage Otter, to the big screen.

Book fine, price-clipped dust jacket very good with creasing and light soiling, wear to extremities, and tape repairs to both sides. An attractive inscribed copy.
