Marc Chagall. Monotypes

BOLDLY INSCRIBED BY CHAGALL IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION: LIMITED EDITION OF MONOTYPES, 1966

(CHAGALL, Marc) LEYMARIE, Jean and CRAMER, Gérald. Marc Chagall. Monotypes 1961-1965. Genève: Gérald Cramer, (1966). Quarto, original light gray cloth, original dust jacket, original cardboard slipcase.

Limited first edition, number 974 of 1350 copies (from a total edition of 1575 copies), of this essay on Chagall’s use of the monotype process, with 25 mounted color plates, appended by Gérald Cramer’s catalogue of Chagall’s monotypes, containing 161 reduced images. Inscribed in blue crayon in the year of publication on the half title: “Pour W Rivlin, Marc Chagall, 1966.”

“Chagall’s emblematic irrationality shook off all outside influences: color governed his compositions, calling up chimerical processions of memory where reality and the imaginary are woven into a single legend, born in Vitebsk and dreamed in Paris” (Dictionary of Modern Art). For many years during the mid 20th century, Chagall was central in the development of modern art. This is an analysis of his use of the monotype process and catalogue of his works in that medium. Chagall, Picasso, Miró, Dubuffet, Matisse and many other contemporary artists produced hundreds of exceptional monotypes. The beauty of the monotype medium is its spontaneity and its combination of drawing painting, and printmaking. The process starts with drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface, usually a copper or zinc plate, or glass. The image is then transferred to paper by running the two together through a press. Text in French. A second volume, covering the years 1966-75, appeared in 1976. One hundred copies of this edition were issued in a deluxe format, signed by Chagall and with an original frontispiece etching. Cramer 65.

A fine inscribed copy.
