LE CARRÉ’S HONOURABLE SCHOOLBOY, JOHN FOWLES’ COPY

(FOWLES, John) LE CARRÉ, John. The Honourable Schoolboy. London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1977). Octavo, original blue-green paper boards, cartographic endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of Le Carré’s second Smiley novel, the copy of English novelist John Fowles, with his ownership signature and blind embossing on the verso of the half title.

Preceded by the novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1974) and followed by Smiley’s People (1979), The Honourable Schoolboy features SIS Chief George Smiley once again fighting the KGB. The novel won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for literature in 1977. Fowles, noted for his novels The Collector, The Magus, and The French Lieutenant’s Woman, was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999. The blind embossing that appears in this book carries his name and “Lyme Regis,” the town on the English seacoast that was his final residence.

Interior fine; light wear to spine ends of about-fine book. Two minor expert repairs to verso of bright dust jacket. An about-fine copy.
