“KEEP YOUR PERVERSIONS IF YOU LIKE THEM— YOUR PERVERSION OF PURITANISM, YOUR PERVERSION OF SMART LICENTIOUSNESS, YOUR PERVERSION OF A DIRTY MIND”
LAWRENCE, D.H. My Skirmish with Jolly Roger. Written as an Introduction to and a Motivation of the Paris Edition of Lady Chatterley’s Lover. New York: Random House, 1929. Slim octavo, original beige paper boards, paper cover label, printed endpapers; pp. 12, original glassine.
Limited first edition of this separately published introduction to the Paris edition of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, number 539 of only 700 copies printed.
In this introduction, Lawrence took a two-part approach to the defense of Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Lawrence began by addressing the rampant piracy the book faced, both in Europe and abroad, and explained his decision to bring out an authorized popular edition. Then, Lawrence took on the content of the work, broaching the topic of sex and arguing passionately in favor of treating sex respectfully, but thoroughly, in literature. He asserted that works such as Lady Chatterley’s Lover offered readers the opportunity to healthily integrate mind and body. With scarce apologia slip laid in. Although the limitation statement states that 600 copies of this book were printed, “the publishers state that actually 700 copies were issued (Roberts & Poplawski A48). A trade edition of this work was published later the same year under the title À Propos of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, however it was rewritten and lengthened by Lawrence and the original was never republished thereafter.
Book near-fine with only slight soiling and minor toning to top edge. A bit of chipping to original glassine.
