"MANHATTAN IS AN ACCUMULATION OF POSSIBLE DISASTERS THAT NEVER HAPPEN": FIRST EDITION OF DELIRIOUS NEW YORK, BOLDLY INSCRIBED BY REM KOOLHAAS

KOOLHAAS, Rem. Delirious New York. A Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan. New York: Oxford University Press, 1978. Large quarto (9-1/2 by 11-1/2 inches), original pink paper boards, cartographic endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of Koolhaas' fascinating "retroactive manifesto," inscribed by him on the title page in red ink, "Rem Koolhaas New York, 9 1 2005," beautifully illustrated in numerous color and black-and-white plates, a splendid copy in bright dust jacket.

Calling New York "the 20th century's Rosetta Stone," Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas here focuses on architecture and design in New York from 1890 until around 1940, with long discussions of Coney Island, "the Skyscraper," the Waldorf Astoria, and Rockefeller Center. It was this "book, Delirious New York, that established Koolhaas's reputation… [placing] Koolhaas on a Surrealist playing field… And, like some Surrealist painters, Koolhaas has the genius to make us forget where we are and know where we are at the same time" (New York Times). His unique talent for detecting the "subconscious clues and themes" of the city makes Delirious New York read "like a psychological thriller." Acclaimed for his Seattle Public Library, completed in 2004, Koolhaas won the prestigious Pritzker Prize for Architecture in 2000.

Only tiny bit of edge-wear to colorful price-clipped dust jacket. A fine inscribed copy.
