"THE NOWING ONES COMPLANE OF MY BOOK THE FUST EDITION HAD NO STOPS I PUT IN A NUF HERE AND THAY MAY PEPER AND SOLT IS AS THEY PLESE…"

(DEXTER, Timothy) KNAPP, Samuel. The Life of Lord Timothy Dexter… Including "Dexter's Pickle for the Knowing Ones" Newburyport: John G. Tilton, 1852. 12mo, modern full red morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Early edition of this biography of the well-known early American eccentric, including the whole text of his work "Dexter's Pickle," hansomely bound by Bayntun Riviere.

Dexter, a notorious New England eccentric, made a fortune following his unorthodox instincts, once sending coal to Newcastle only to have it arrive during a miners' strike and earn him a handsome profit. His only work, Dexter's Pickle for the Knowing Ones, is republished here; the first edition was published with no punctuation and unorthodox spelling and capitalization, while later editions included two pages of punctuation marks "that thay may peper and solt it as they plese." First published in 1848; Dexter's Pickle was first published in 1802. Bookplate.
