“AT ONCE SENSUOUS AND REFINED”: TWENTY-FIVE DRAWINGS BY KLIMT, ON ELEPHANT FOLIO PLATES

KLIMT, Gustav. 25 Zeichnungen [25 Drawings]. Vienna: Akademische Druck- und Verlagsanstalt Graz-Wien, 1964. Elephant folio (16-1/2 by 23 inches), text and 25 plates loose as issued in original portfolio, original slipcase, original shipping box.

First edition, with 25 elephant folio lithographic plates of drawings by Klimt, selected and with an introduction by Alice Strobl.

"Klimt had transformed traditional allegory and symbolism into a new language which was more overtly sexual, and hence more disturbing" (Sabarsky, 9). "Klimt's immensely erotic portraits and sexually-charged sketches, his richly patterned landscapes and mysterious allegorical compositions, are at once sensuous and refined and remain among the most recognized works of art in the world" (Julian Damy). Strobl, who selected the 25 drawings and wrote the introductory text, began her decades-long work on Klimt's drawings in 1963, eventually publishing a catalogue of the complete drawings of Klimt beginning in 1980. Text in German.

Plates and text fine, a bit of spotting to spine of original portfolio. Quite scarce.
