“IF YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HEAD WHEN ALL ABOUT YOU…”: KIPLING’S REWARDS AND FAIRIES, WITH THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF “IF—”

KIPLING, Rudyard. Rewards and Fairies. London: Macmillan, 1910. Octavo, modern three-quarter burgundy morocco gilt, raised bands, top edge gilt.

First edition of this collection of verse and short stories, containing the first appearance of “If—,” handsomely bound.

This collection of 23 poems and 11 short stories includes "A Charm," "The Way through the Woods," "Cold Iron," and the first appearance of "If—." Dr. Leander Starr Jameson visited Rudyard Kipling and his family in the fall of 1909. "After a shaky start as leader of failed military raid in 1895 Jameson had gone on to become one of the most respected South African prime ministers. Young John Kipling was very impressed by his father's heroic friend. His son's reaction and his own respect for Jameson were in his mind as Kipling penned the words to his famous poem, If" (Dalhousie University). The poem, in Kipling's words, "escaped from the book, and for a while ran about the world." As late as 1995 and then again in 2005, a national BBC Television poll found "If " to be Britain's favorite poem. The London printing preceded the New York edition of the same year and contains several lines not appearing in the American issue. With four plates by Frank Craig, a leaf listing other works by Kipling, and four leaves of publisher's advertisements at rear. Livingston 341. Richards A242.

Fine condition, handsomely bound.
