KIPLING, Rudyard. The Bombay Edition of the Works of Rudyard Kipling. London: Macmillan, 1913-19. Twenty-five volumes. Octavo, mid-20th century three-quarter crimson morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut.

Signed limited “Bombay Edition” of Kipling’s complete novels, tales and verse, one of only 1050 sets signed by Kipling on the half-title in the first volume, beautifully bound in morocco-gilt by Riviere & Son.

The first English recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Kipling “is generally identified as ‘the laureate of empire,’ to use [George] Orwell’s phrase” (Stringer, 365). This distinguished collection includes all of Kipling’s major novels, stories and poetry, among them such classics as Kim, Captains Courageous, the delightful Just So Stories and the two celebrated Jungle Books, which “will always fill an honorable place in any library of children’s books” (Quayle 87). The Bombay Edition was printed on paper made especially for it, watermarked “R [elephant-headed Ganesha and lotus] K”. Six further volumes collecting later work were added to the Bombay Edition between 1927-38. Just So Stories (Volume 16) reproduces Kipling’s original illustrations. Livingston, 454-56.

Interiors fresh and clean. Light expert restoration to several joints or spines. Light soiling to front boards of Volumes 2 and 13. A very handsome set in excellent condition.
