"I PULLED IT BECAUSE… IT MIGHT BE HURTING PEOPLE": FIRST EDITION OF STEPHEN KING'S BACHMAN BOOKS, WITH HIS CONTROVERSIAL WORK RAGE AND THREE OTHER NOVELS

KING, Stephen. The Bachman Books: Four Early Novels by Stephen King, Rage, The Long Walk, Roadwork, The Running Man. New York: New American Library, (1985). Thick octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket.

First omnibus edition, first printing, of four early novels written by King under his "Richard Bachman" pseudonym, featuring Rage, the infamous work King once pulled from publication.

In King's introduction to this increasingly scarce collection he writes: "Two of these novels, perhaps even all four, might have been published under my own name if I had been a little more savvy about the publishing business or if I hadn't been preoccupied in the years they were written with first trying to get myself through school and then to support my family… I only published them (and am allowing them to be republished now) because they are still my friends; they are undoubtedly maimed in some ways, but they still seem very much alive to me." Of the four novels in this volume, Rage has become one of King's most controversial—and most elusive—works. "Rage first appeared as a paperback under King's pseudonym Richard Bachman in 1977 and then was published in 1985 in a collection of short novels, titled The Bachman Books… He asked his publishers to remove Rage from publication after the novel was linked to four real-life school shooting incidents [from 1998-1997]… 'I pulled it because in my judgment it might be hurting people, and that made it the responsible thing to do,' King wrote" (Business Insider). First edition, first printing. Includes Rage (1977), The Long Walk (1979), Roadwork (1981) and The Running Man (1982). The Running Man was adapted to the screen in 1987, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Only lightest edge-wear to bright dust jacket. A handsome about-fine copy.
