“WITH BEST WISHES FOR PEACE AND BROTHERHOOD”: EXCEPTIONAL PRESENTATION/ASSOCIATION FIRST EDITION OF WHERE TO WE GO FROM HERE, INSCRIBED BY MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

KING Jr., Martin Luther. Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? New York, Evanston, and London: Harper & Row, (1967). Octavo, original half black cloth over yellow paper boards, original photographic dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition of King’s last book, published the year before his assassination, an exceedingly scarce presentation/association copy inscribed by him to the parents of actress Julia Roberts, “To Mr. & Mrs. Walter Roberts, With Best Wishes for Peace and Brotherhood, Martin Luther King, Jr.”

King’s final book saw print the year before the legendary civil rights leader was assassinated in Memphis. Based upon his last address as President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, delivered in August 1967, the book discusses issues raised by recent urban race riots, white backlash and the 1966 shooting of James Meredith. “We have inherited a large house, a great ‘world house’ in which we have to live together—black and white, Easterner and Westerner, Gentile and Jew, Catholic and Protestant, Moslem and Hindu.” Recipients Walter and Betty Roberts were well-acquainted with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King. The Kings’ children attended the Roberts’ acting school in Decatur, Georgia, and when Julia Roberts was born, Mrs. King picked up the hospital bill.

Book fine; minor dampstaining to spine end of near-fine dust jacket. Scarce inscribed.
