SIGNED AND DATED ANDRÉ KERTÉSZ PHOTOGRAPH OF A HUNGARIAN BOY HERDING SHEEP, ALSO CAPTIONED IN KERTÉSZ'S HAND
KERTÉSZ, André. Photographic print signed. ["Sziget Becse"]
. [New York, circa 1972]. Silver gelatin print, measuring 8 by 10 inches. $2300.
Photograph printed by Kertész’s studio, signed and captioned by him in pencil on the verso, apparently produced to promote the publication of Sixty Years of Photography (1972) and eventually published in Kertész on Kertész (1985).
Kertész was "one of the first photographers to demonstrate the tremendous richness of the street… his work is known for its wit, composition and sense of the unusual" (Blodgett, 96). This exceptional photograph of a pasture near the Hungarian town of Sziget Becse appeared in Kertész on Kertész (1985) as "Hungary, 1914," on page 14. Kertész spent his childhood summers with an uncle who lived in Sziget Becse. Kertész donated a number of signed photos to the town in 1984, intended for them to be on permanent exhibition at the town museum. Later, he donated a number of signed paintings. After his death, some of his personal effects, such as furniture, were given to the museum. Captioned and signed by Kertesz in pencil, "Sziget Becse, May 5-1914, A. Kertész."
