PT-109

"ONE OF THE GREATEST WAR ADVENTURES OF OUR TIME"

DONOVAN, Robert J. PT-109. John F. Kennedy in World War II. New York: McGraw-Hill, (1961). Octavo, original half dark gray cloth, cartographic endpapers, original dust jacket. $650.

First edition of the gripping tale of JFK’s heroic actions during World War II.

After his PT boat was rammed and left for dead by the Japanese submarine Amagiri on August 2, 1943, Lieutenant Kennedy's decisive leadership helped save the lives of ten sailors. His status as a bona fide war hero helped him defeat eight opponents in the 1946 Democratic primary for Congress, and ultimately propelled him into the White House. Not only did author Robert Donovan interview the surviving members of PT-109, he also traveled to the Solomons and interviewed the natives who helped with the rescue, and went to Tokyo to interview the captain and crew of the Amagiri as well. With photographic illustrations.

Book fine, dust jacket with minor toning to spine and a bit of wear to spine extremities.
