Orlando (The Marmalade Cat) A Seaside Holiday

“BRIGHTLY PAINTED BOATS LAY ON THE BEACH, COLOURED TOWELS AND BATHING COSTUMES WERE SPREAD OUT TO DRY, AND THEIR OWNERS LAY IN THE SUNSHINE EATING ICES…”

HALE, Kathleen. Orlando (The Marmalade Cat). A Seaside Holiday. London: Country Life Limited, (1952). Folio (11 by 14-1/2 inches), original half black cloth, original pictorial boards, patterned endpapers, original dust jacket.

First edition of this installment in the Orlando the Marmalade Cat series, in which Marmalade and his family go on holiday to Owlbarrow-on-Sea.

Kathleen Hale, a Scottish artist, began writing and illustrating the Orlando the Marmalade Cat books in 1938 for her two young sons. “By the early 1950s Orlando had become a household name in England… The appeal of the series is almost entirely visual. Kathleen Hale seems to have been the first British picture book artist to have made full use of the possibilities of colour offset-lithography… the whole having the appearance of a crayon drawing. The early books in the series, like the first Babar stories of Jean de Brunhoff, had an unusually large page-size, which allowed Hale to fill them with a profusion of detail that could hold a child’s attention for many minutes… The stories themselves rely a good deal on puns… at their best they are wittily inventive… If there is a serious purpose in the series, it is, according to Kathleen Hale, to give children a taste of warm, happy family life… In Britain [Marmalade] has retained his popularity, and historians of children’s literature agree in regarding his arrival on the scene in 1938 as a milestone in the development of the British picture book” (Carpenter & Prichard, 389-90).

Book bright and near-fine, with only a few tiny spots to interior and boards and slight rubbing to edges. Dust jacket lovely and near-fine, with only minor rubbing and toning to extremities.
