Born the great grandson of a Civil War officer, MacKinlay Kantor won the 1956 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for this “powerful depiction of life and brutality in a prisoner-of-war camp of the Confederacy… Historian Henry Steele Commager called Andersonville ‘the greatest of our Civil War novels” (New York Times).
