1673 FIRST EDITION OF HOLYDAY'S ILLUSTRATED TRANSLATION OF JUVENAL AND PERSIUS: THE FIRST PRINTING IN ENGLISH OF JUVENAL'S COMPLETE SATIRES

(JUVENAL) (PERSIUS) HOLYDAY, Barten, translator. Decimus Junius Juvenalis, and Aulus Persius Flaccus. Translated and Illustrated, As well with Sculpture as Notes. Oxford: Printed by W. Downing, for F. Oxlad, et al., 1673. Small folio (7-1/2 by 11-1/2 inches), early 20th-century full plum pebbled morocco, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt.

First complete edition of Juvenal's satires in English, with four engraved plates (two folding), 31 large in-text engravings, and 15 in-text woodcuts.

"This is considered by some classical scholars the most literal translation of these Roman satirists, and contains the most learned notes. Holyday was a writer of great erudition, and even of critical acuteness, as this commentary shows" (Rosenbach 27: 259). "The present volume may be called sumptuous, for it boasts [four] full-page illustrations, and 48 small metal and wood-engravings in the text… The verses are close translations of the original… each satire is first translated into verse, then annotated in smaller type… the annotations are learned and discursive" (Madan). In the preface to his own translations of Juvenal and Persius, Dryden remarked that "If rendering the exact sense of these Authors, almost line for line, had been our business, Barten Holyday had done it already to our hands." Wing J1276. Madan 2729. Brueggemann, 680. Bookplate of John Dyneley Prince (1868-1945), American linguist, diplomat and politician. Early ink marginalia in Persius.

Occasional foxing and ink staining to text, folding plate opposite page 73 with repaired closed tear, title page with owner signature excised from upper right corner, repaired with portion of border supplied in pen facsimile, not touching letterpress; front free endpaper rehinged. Light rubbing to front joint, corners, and lower edge. A very good copy.
