Modern Man in Search of a Soul

"THE PIONEERING FOUNDER OF ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY": FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF C.G. JUNG'S MODERN MAN IN SEARCH OF A SOUL, 1933

JUNG. C.G. Modern Man in Search of a Soul. London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner, 1933. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

First edition in English of Jung's breakthrough collection of eleven early works, marking the line "between his own and the other schools of psychology and psychotherapy" (New York Times), with eight appearing in English for the first time.

"Jung was the pioneering founder of analytical psychology… From its earliest beginnings, as a fledgling science growing up alongside Freudian analysis, Jung's psychology broadened its field of application to include the study of human behavior and cultural systems… He became interested in everything that had a 'symbolic' content, from the dreams and fantasies of patients to the rituals and myths of religions, the visionary poems and novels of writers, and the utopian aspirations of political systems" (Tacey ed. Jung Reader, 2). With Freud and Adler, Jung "influenced Western man's thinking as it had not been influenced since the publication of Origin of the Species in 1859" (New York Times). His impact "has been significant not only in religion and art, through his rehabilitation of symbolic expression, but also in history, economics, and the philosophy of science" (DSB). He was, as well, responsible for "many terms we now consider common parlance, such as the 'archetype,' the 'unconscious' and the 'collective unconscious'… 'introvert' and 'extravert,' the two main divisions of his 'personality types'… 'anima' and 'animus'" (Bair, Jung, 5). In this major collection, Jung defines "the line of cleavage between his own and the other schools of psychology and psychotherapy" (New York Times). With translation by W.S. Dell and Cary F. Baynes. Containing eight works appearing in English for the first time: Dream Analysis in its Practical Application (1931); Aims of Psychotherapy (1929); A Psychological Theory of Types (1931); Stages of Life (1930); Freud and Jung—Contrasts (1929); Archaic Man (1930/1931); The Basic Postulates of Analytical Psychology (1931); Psychotherapists or the Clergy (1932). Aside from Freud and Jung—Contrasts, "all the essays were delivered as lectures" (Translator's Preface, ix). Ress 1933a. Contemporary owner signature dated year of publication.
