This photo-illustrated autobiography shares the story of Joe Peterburs, a World War II American fighter pilot. Peterburs enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps toward the end of 1942 and by 1944 received his pilots’s wings and a commission as a 2nd lieutenant. He was only 19 by the time he reached England and began flying combat missions. He soon made a name for himself as an accomplished ace. However, it was his 49th and last mission that garnered him greatest recognition. On April 10, 1945, Peterburs shot down famous German ace Walter Schuck. Later that same day, Peterburs was shot down while strafing an airfield. He was captured and made a POW, but soon escaped. Ultimately, he joined a Russian tank unit and joined the Battle of Wittenberg on the Elbe. Peterburs went on to fight in Korea, flying 76 missions over North Korea and sustaining small arms fire to his aircraft that struck him in the face. He was present in Nevada for atomic bomb tests. He also fought in Vietnam and was nearly killed during the Tet Offensive. Indeed, Peterburs did not retire until 1979. His military decorations include: The Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with 1 OLC, Bronze Star with 1 OLC, Purple Heart with 1 OLC, Air Medal with 7 OLC, POW Medal and 32 other medals and decorations. This copy is signed by both Peterburs and the Luftwaffe pilot he shot down (and ultimately met in 2005), Walter Schuck.

A fine signed copy.
